Venice

A WEEKEND EXPLORING THE VENETO:
PADUA, THE VENICE BIENNALE & PALLADIO’S VILLAS ALONG THE BRENTA

FRIDAY, JUNE 7 – SUNDAY, JUNE 9

Overview

After a week absorbing the cultural and intellectual delights of Mantova, join us on a journey to the Veneto and its glorious capital, Venice.

Our five-star hotel is on a private island between Venice and the Lido, handy for key Biennale sites. A complimentary shuttle service means we approach the city as it should be approached, by boat. Our days will be rich with walking, talking, art and architecture, and trying the regional cuisine. You’ll have leisure time for shopping for vintage bautta (or carnival masks), paper and glass, visiting churches and museums, getting lost, and, of course, sliding gently through the city by gondola or using traghetti to cross the Grand Canal. It’s going to be splendido!

Lodging: San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice

During the Renaissance, key guests of the Venetian state were welcomed by the Doge’s barge at the religious enclave of San Clemente and ferried in style to the city. We can’t quite offer you the Doge’s barge, but we can provide you with the perfect position for the Biennale. The five-star palazzo-style San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice is on a private island between the city and the Lido, with views across the water and complimentary boat crossings to/from Venice, just minutes away. The 190-room pink-and-white hotel has three restaurants and bars, a swimming pool and a spa, above all it is gorgeously peaceful, set in its own gardens with tennis courts and a pitch and putt. Room sizes will vary, and we will assign rooms based on the order of reservation. If you would like a guaranteed upgrade to a suite for example, please contact us directly, and we will give you the upgrade rates.

What to Expect

The weather in Venice in June is usually lovely: fairly cool mornings and evenings this early in the month – expect anything from low 60s – rising through the 70s during the day. But remember, this is a maritime climate, so please be prepared with a light waterproof jacket, extra layers – quilted gilets or cashmere sweaters are invaluable – and shoes that can endure the odd shower. Although we are walking every day, we will generally be in urban environments and on flat ground. Please do let us know about any dietary requirements, particularly allergies or any problems with seafood. And while we hope you love the itinerary outlined above, we do reserve the right to mix things up and swap items around, reacting local happenings and maximizing the good times.

Wine & Lakes

A WEEKEND IN FRANCIACORTA, BERGAMO AND LAKE ISEO

THURSDAY, JUNE 13 – SATURDAY, JUne 15, 2019

overview

An hour and a half from Mantova by road, also in the region of Lombardy, is the wine-growing region of Franciacorta, famed for its sparkling wines since the sixteenth century. It’s extraordinarily lush: vines stripe the gently rolling landscape, walls are drenched in creepers, the valley floor is cultivated and the hills densely wooded. It’s also an area largely overlooked by tourists, giving it a local flavour and a very special charm. Our hotel is just south of the Lago d’Iseo, one of the Italian lakes in the foothills of the Alps, about halfway between the lovely cities of Brescia and Bergamo; it is a Relais Chateaux gem nestled amongst the vines of Franciacorta.  We will visit Bergamo, with its hilltop mediaeval heart surrounded by Venetian walls, and take a scenic boat trip exploring the still waters and tiny, verdant islands of the S-shaped Lago d’Iseo.

Lodging: L’Albereta, Franciacorta

This charming, mellow country estate, with its glowing tiled roof and walls carpeted in vegetation, was built in the nineteenth century for a lawyer and his musician wife, both keen entertainers, so hospitality is in its DNA. It sits in the gently beautiful landscape of the Italian lakes, surrounded by undulating vines, with the foothills of the Alps receding into the distance and the sparkling blue waters of Lago d’Iseo stretched out beyond its terrace. It has 38 rooms, several restaurants and a wonderful spa, all set in extensive grounds with planted with lush flowers and vegetables. Room sizes will vary, and we will assign rooms based on the order of reservation. If you would like a guaranteed upgrade to a suite for example, please contact us directly and we will give you the upgrade rates.

What to Expect

June in Bergamo is warm and sunny with occasional showers or rainy days. Expect temperatures in the high 70s, sometimes higher, but we are in hill country, so a light sweater or jacket is a good idea for mornings and evenings. Bring a hat for the lake day. We will be doing a pleasant amount of walking (keen hikers can add on longer walks each day) but there are substantial hills and we may be walking off paved paths – for instance in vineyards or the Hills Park – so bring appropriate footwear. And while we hope you love the itinerary outlined above, we do reserve the right to mix things up and swap things around, reacting to local events and maximizing the good times.

verona

A WEEKEND IN VERONA

friday, JUNE 21 – sunday, JUNE 23, 2019

Overview

Spend the weekend in romantic Verona, set on the flat inland plains south of Lake Garda, in a double loop of the River Adige. This area is known as the Pre-Alps and Verona was first part of the Venetian Republic, then Austria, then Napoleon’s Kingdom of Italy, until it finally joined a united Italy in 1866. This rich mix of cultures and its roots as a Roman resort – Julius Caesar used to stay here between campaigns – give it a variegated history, with art and architecture to match. Many of its buildings are made of red brick, tufa and cement, giving them a charming striped appearance. It has magnificent Roman structures – the basalt Roman streets lie below the modern city – and of course it was the fictional home town of arguably the world’s most famous young lovers, Romeo and Juliet. No wonder it has UNESCO Word Heritage Site status. Better still, it’s surrounded by food producing areas, including vineyards and paddy fields.

Lodging: Lords of Verona Luxury Apartments

Well, here’s a surprise: right in the middle of the historic centre of Verona, in a thirteenth-century building on the Piazza dei Signori, just two minutes’ walk from Juliet’s House, are the wonderfully-named Lords of Verona Luxury Apartments. These very 21st-century apartments have bright, contemporary interiors, fully-equipped kitchen diners, excellent bathrooms and beds and apartment-wide air-conditioning. They are flooded with light and make the perfect foil to busy days of sightseeing – let’s face it, every so often you need a break from history.

What to Expect

The plains of the Veneto and Lombardy are known for their humidity, although this is slightly alleviated by the presence of Lake Garda to the north. June is a lovely time of year and you should expect fairly constant temperatures, working up to 75°F to 80°F in the afternoons. The pace of this program is gentle, mostly city strolling, but we may be on our feet for half the day or more. While we hope that you love the itinerary outlined above, we do, of course, reserve the right to mix things up and swap things in to maximize the good times.
