Day 1 - Arusha to Zanzibar

After breakfast at Gibb’s farm with our group, we will bid them adieu and head to the airport via private transfer for a mid-day flight from Arusha to Zanzibar. We will snack on a boxed lunch en-route during our short trip to this exotic island. Once we land in Zanzibar, our local guide will meet us at the airport with a private transfer to our resort hotel, the Park Hyatt located on the ocean front of historic Stone Town.

We will relax at our hotel during the heat of the day--lounging by the pool or on our private balconies and watching the boats go by. In the early evening, we will set sail for a sunset cruise in a traditional wooden dhow.  Afterward, in the cool night air, explore this historic seaside city center on your own. With its labyrinth of narrow streets, white-washed Arabesque buildings and mosques, sprawling markets and palm tree-shaded courtyards, there is something to see at every turn.  Join Dana for a stroll to the Forodhani Gardens night market brimming with outdoor stalls selling fresh fish dinners of all sorts. Dinner is on your own, so you’ll have a chance to explore and try some local delicacies.

Day 2 – Stone Town & white sandy beaches!

We will rise early this morning to visit Stone Town in the coolest part of the day. Amongst the winding alleyways, you will visit the House of Wonders, a palace built in the 1880s that has since housed the headquarters of the colonial administration.  We will also learn more about the island's tainted history as a slave and ivory trading capital.

After our morning tour, we will make our way to Zuri Zanizbar to relax on the beach for two days.  Take your pick of activities including boating, snorkeling or diving. We will be more than happy to help you arrange everything in advance - we can even organize for you to ride your very own dhow!If lazing about is the order of the day, there are few better places on earth to relax as the pristine beaches of Zanzibar, whether hanging out on a comfy lounge chair with a good book or swaying in a hammock under a palm tree.

Meet up at the bar before dinner for a drink and casual talk by our academic host Adam Tooze who will paint the historical backdrop of this island—from the Age of Exploration when the Portuguese Empire was the first European power to gain control of Zanzibar to the country falling into the hands of the Sultanate of Oman, to the Arab slave trade, to the British Empire, to the Zanzibar Revolution all the way to today. Adam’s talks will inform our understanding of the culture and architecture all around us.

We will tuck into dinner as a group after our first beachside history lesson.  Once at Zuri, all meals will be served at the hotel and are included. You’ll have no reason to want to venture elsewhere: the ingredients from the local garden make each dish a delicacy.

Day 3 - Beach Days Continue

There’s no denying it - Zanzibar and Zuri are paradise on earth, and today is yours to enjoy as you wish without schedules or alarm clocks. Do as much or as little as you like.

Choose to have your lunch today whenever suits best and spend the afternoon at leisure. Dana may decide to go snorkeling, let her know if you’d like to join. We will meet up this evening for our casual history-by-the-beach talk with Adam Tooze. Dinner is on your own whenever you please – may we suggest a sunset tête-à-tête meal?

Day 4 – Stone Town; Dar es Salaam; Home

Enjoy a lazy morning at the beach before saying goodbye.  We will have a private transfer take us back to the airport to catch our mid-day flight heading back to mainland Tanzania to the city of Dar es Salaam.

Our local hospitality team will meet us at the airport for private transfer to the Hyatt Regency’s “Kilimanjaro Hotel”, where we will have the chance to rest up before our flights back to the United States. Closer to your departure time, you will be picked up for private transfer to Dar es Salaam airport. Please note there is no early check-in available at this airport, so spend the day unwinding at the hotel until the very last minute. We recommend a meal at one of the great restaurants at The Kilimanjaro– enjoying dinner in the garden or a drink on the rooftop with a view!

Safe travels home and see you again soon!
