Cotswolds SOIRÉE 2024

June 1 - 13, 2024

Join us for a magical romp through the English countryside!

We will take care of all of the details, All we need is you.

Our Soirées

The goal of these small and elegant confections is to capture the energy of a perfect dinner party—great food, fine wine, excellent conversation, beautiful company—and extend it for an entire trip. The group must be intellectually curious, fun-loving, and fit enough to enjoy our walks through the English countryside. As hosts, we will bring the stories, the charm, and the keys to open doors to magical opportunities.  The location should hum with art, culture, history, stunning sights and culinary delights. This time it’s the Cotswolds with its romantic villages, delightful gardens and rich cultural life.

Highlights

  • Take tea in the gardens of Kings, both Ross and Charles III! Best-selling author Ross King has generously invited us to join him for afternoon tea in his own private garden and discuss his upcoming book on Winston Churchill. Enjoy an exclusive tour of His Majesty the King’s Highgrove Gardens followed by a Champagne Tea.

  • Celebrate the power of literature during our after-hours visit to the Bodleian Library, a world-renowned institution in Oxford and one of the oldest libraries in Europe. Our welcome soirée allows you to surround yourself with centuries of knowledge on a private walkthrough Duke Humphrey’s Library (15th century), then dine beneath the vaulted stone ceilings of the 17th century Convocation House.

  • Experience an exclusive private after-hours visit, lecture and dinner at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, as well as at Kiftsgate Court Gardens. Through the lens of plant and artifact collecting and architectural influences, we will discuss the far-reaching impact of the British Empire.

  • Explore the history of the Cotswolds with illuminating tours of museums, monuments, archaeological sites and architectural stunners led by our treasured Blue Badge Guide Sophie Campbell. (Six will be after-hours and privatized only for our group.)

  • Absorb the natural beauty of the English countryside with tailored walks and visits to gardens galore (over eleven!) with seven exclusive tours, many led by the head gardeners.

  • Experience Tudor education at William Shakespeare’s 16th-century one-room schoolhouse, where he learned to read and write and saw his first play! Then relax into the best seats available for a theatre production by the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.

  • Loll about in utter luxury in our perfectly located boutique accommodations, curated by Dana Conley - your bubbly (if not very English) brew of a tour director.

  • Indulge in the best local cuisine with ten group dinners created by superb chefs, seven in privatized spaces, plus eight private teas and receptions and seven exclusive lunches, all washed down by wines and regional beers & ciders in carefully selected restaurants and private venues.

  • Admire an array of adorable alliterative towns, including Bladon, Barnsley, Bibury, Burford, Broadway, Burton-on-The-Water, and Blenheim, then Sudeley, Slad, Sezincote; Stow-on-Wold, Slaughter (Upper & Lower), and Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon!

Accommodations

We have personally selected the top hotels for our soirée in what we consider to be the best locations.  Our selected luxury hotels are either in the heart of each city, making walking to the major sites a cinch, or country hotels set in sumptuous grounds. We have reserved deluxe-style rooms with King beds – going for a blend of space and views.  As no two rooms are the same in these historical buildings, we will do our best to be fair when handing out the space and the views over the course of the trip; when pressed, we assign room priority in the order we receive the RSVPs. Should you wish to upgrade your room category in any of the hotels, let us know and we can price that out for you.

OLD Bank Hotel in Oxford (2 nights)

This five-star hotel is an old friend: we love its position, smack bang on the High Street ('The High') near the University Church, opposite the iconic Radcliffe Camera and Bodleian library, several colleges, the river and lots of good shopping.

Ranked 4th in Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Top Hotels in the UK’ in their 30th annual Readers’ Choice Awards and listed in The Sunday Times Ultimate 100 British Hotels as ‘the place to stay in Oxford.’ We love the Carrara marble-clad bathrooms, striking artworks from the owners’ private collection, and access to the hotel’s bikes to trundle around the city. Kerching!

Lords of the Manor (3 nights)

Set in 8 acres of lawns and grandiose gardens, Lords of the Manor dates to 1649 and the honey-colored stone of the manor instantly evokes nostalgia for decadent pastimes – without compromising on modern comforts. A truly enchanting getaway near the villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter, the hotel sits at the centre of a network of lovely walks, with glorious countryside all around. Lords of the Manor has been listed in the Sunday Times’ Top 100 restaurants in Britain, and named as one of the Top 20 Most Romantic Dining Rooms by The Times – good news for us as we have arranged three lovely dinners here!

Calcot & Spa (3 nights)

Stylish rooms, a sublime spa and top-notch dining, set within 220 acres of rewilded Cotswolds countryside – hello Calcot & Spa!

We will laze and graze over seasonal and delicious cuisine in a myriad of stylish settings. The Cotswolds’ Calcot & Spa has been named Pride of Britain Hotel for 2019 for delivering outstanding hospitality in service, accommodation, housekeeping, food and luxury.

Calcot Spa features an outdoor hot tub, which overlooks an open wood fire, an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, fully-equipped gym and seven treatment rooms. Guests can also make the most of complimentary bicycle hire to venture into the Cotswolds or explore the extensive grounds.

Lygon Arms (3 nights)

At the Lygon Arms hotel, we're now over the border in Worcestershire (pronounced 'Wooster-shuh'), in the northern part of the Cotswolds. According to Condé Nast Traveler: “It's difficult to find such a historic property that is still an allure to in-the-know travelers, and the Lygon Arms has been doing it well since the 16th century.” One of several coaching inns in the sloping village of Broadway, and busy in Tudor times as travellers passed between London and Wales. This is where Oliver Cromwell stayed in 1651, just before he defeated King Charles I at the Battle of Worcester. Cosy is the word for this hotel - and it's brilliantly placed for museums, pubs and shopping.

Surrounded by three lush acres of Cotswold scenery, the spa is a must-visit. It features an indoor pool, a sauna and steam room, many treatment rooms, as well as a fully stocked gym. This being a true British country estate, there are plenty of old-school activities to pass the time, among them archery, pistol shooting, falconry, duck herding, clay shooting, and more.

Your Tour Director and Study Leaders

We will be accompanied by excellent local guides throughout our trip, personally vetted by your Tour Director, Dana Conley.

Your Tour Director, Dana Conley, fell in love with international travel during college while studying art and politics at the Stanford-in-Florence program. Dana lived in Europe for six years, and goes back for extended stays every year. She majored in International Relations and has travelled to over 50 countries in search of authentic adventures, beautiful meals, and life-changing moments to share with her private and organizational clients.  Via Conley & Silvers LLC, her goal is to provide guests with the highest level of customer service while creating unique and magical itineraries and events.  Before co-founding Conley & Silvers, Dana’s career spanned from being a researcher in Asian security matters at the Pentagon and International security think tanks to art appraisal and directing an art gallery.  When Dana is not tour managing or on a reconnaissance mission, she divides her time between Europe, New York City, and Great Guana Cay where museum going, antiquing and yoga reign as her favorite pastimes.

Blue Badge Guide Sophie Campbell was brought up in Asia and Africa and has been based in London for the past 25 years, writing for many national publications. She wrote a monthly column for the travel pages of the Daily Telegraph and guides many incoming journalists and corporate clients on their visits to London. Her book, The Season, details her summer whirl through the English social season – think big hats, camping in queues and royal regattas.

Guest speaker Ross King is the bestselling author of books on Italian, French and Canadian art and history. Among his books are Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling  (2002), Leonardo and The Last Supper (Governor General’s Award, 2012), and Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies (Charles Taylor Prize, 2017). As Time Magazine said, ‘King has made a career elucidating crucial episodes in the history of art and architecture.’ In tandem with his writing, Ross is an active fundraiser for the arts and a passionate lecturer and tour guide. When not traveling for work or pleasure, he lives in the historic town of Woodstock, near Oxford, with his wife Melanie.

What to Expect

To experience all of our planned activities, and keep us from gaining a few stones, you’ll need to be happy with significant daily touring on foot, including a few miles in the countryside and shuffling around in museums.  We will certainly get in our steps on this trip!  Remember English towns are often older and filled uneven surfaces, cobblestones, and stairs without railings, so you need to be surefooted.  While we are in the cities or at cultural sites, you can always take a coffee break or grab a taxi. We will discuss daily the upcoming walking difficulty in advance so you can make your decisions and spa appointments accordingly. Of course, we have kept you all in mind when designing this trip, so we’ve handpicked walking routes that we feel everyone who is fit can enjoy.

Luggage allowance is limited per person to:  1 large suitcase + 1 carry-on/roll aboard + 1 personal item like a handbag. Additional luggage requiring a porter will be charged a $50 fee per piece to cover added costs.

While we hope that you love the itinerary outlined above, we, of course, reserve the right to mix things up and swap things in to maximize the good times.

Notes for Arrivals and Departures

For a complimentary arrival transfer, we will accommodate any arrivals into London Heathrow LHR within 2 days of the start of our trip.  You will want your flight to arrive into LHR, by 11 am Sunday, June 2, 2024.  If you are flying from the USA, this means you will depart on Saturday, June 1st.   Please note that check-in is guaranteed by 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 2nd; our first activity is at 5:00 pm the same day.

For a complimentary departure transfer, flights should be scheduled out of London Heathrow (LHR) on Thursday, June 13th.  We will accommodate any flight time on this day for providing private or semi-private transfers.

TRAVELING DURING COVID-19

We will follow the rules established by the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom.  Currently, U.S. travelers are permitted to travel to the U.K. regardless of their vaccination status and testing is not required.  Should this change, we will of course have to be flexible and observe the new safety measures. As long as the US and UK permit leisure travel, we plan to run this wonderful itinerary.  Should it become unsafe to travel according to the government authorities, then we will reschedule the trip to a later date.

We highly recommend travel insurance covering medical expenses, trip interruption, and emergency medical evacuation benefits.  Please note that most comprehensive travel insurance policies request that you sign up for travel insurance within 2 weeks of the first deposit cashed in order to receive special perks.  There are a variety of policies available to suit all budgets, and please let us know if you need help securing travel insurance.

Costs

You can pay via check, bank transfer or credit card. Those paying by check will receive a room upgrade at one of our hotel stays.

Double Occupancy
$10,990 per person

Single Occupancy
$13,350 per person

The price is based in dollars and will not fluctuate with the exchange rates.

Given the time difference and the exciting events on the evening of our arrival day, we suggest that you consider arriving at least a day early to start working on jet-lag.  We can book early extra nights for you at the Old Bank Hotel for a few pounds less than the advertised rates on their website. Booking the extra nights through C&S guarantees that you will not have to change rooms when the trip officially starts.

RSVP & Deposit

We would be thrilled if you’d like to join us!  Please fill out the form below to book your places.

Once we have confirmed your reservation, you will be sent an invoice with instructions for remitting your deposit. The initial deposit of $2,500 per person will be due within 14 days of your RSVP and is payable via credit card, bank transfer or check. The final deposit with the remaining balance will be due on January 15, 2024.  As all payments are non-refundable, we strongly recommend purchasing trip insurance. Make your insurance purchase within two weeks of paying your deposit for added benefits to your policy, such as the ability to purchase “cancel for any reason” insurance or to have preexisting conditions waived (read your policy carefully). Let us know if you would like help with a trip insurance quote.
